How to evaluate an IPTV/OTT platform in 2026
Search "best IPTV platform 2026" and you get lists — ranked by who bought the placement, padded with the same adjectives. None of them help you actually choose. So here is the other thing: a framework for evaluating a platform yourself, built from the questions that separate an operator-grade system from a good-looking pitch.
Seven questions. Ask every vendor the same ones, and demand a number wherever a number should exist.
1. Will you show me a measured quality number?
Every platform claims "broadcast quality" and "superior compression." Ask for the evidence: a VMAF comparison — the perceptual metric that tracks what viewers notice — on real content, at a stated bitrate, with the method written down. If the answer is a datasheet adjective rather than a measurement, you have learned something.
What good looks like: a vendor who can hand you the numbers and the methodology, and let you argue with them. We publish ours — statmux vs CBR, measured with VMAF, including the worst-channel result that the average hides.
"Broadcast quality" is a claim. A VMAF score at a stated bitrate is a fact. Ask for the fact.
2. Does one encode feed every output — or do I run two stacks?
You will serve on-net set-top boxes and off-net apps: IPTV and OTT are two transports for the same content. The question is whether the platform encodes a channel once and feeds UDP/DVB multicast and HLS/DASH and SRT/RTMP from that single encode — or whether "OTT" is a separate product with its own encoders, packaging and operations bill. One encode, every output, is the difference between one platform and two.
3. What actually runs on one server?
Density is where marketing meets physics. Ask how many encoder sessions run on one GPU, and on what card. A platform that needs a rack of data-centre GPUs to do what another does on a consumer card has a very different power, cooling and capital cost — for the same line-up. Concrete beats abstract: our figure is 25+ Full HD channels in production on a single RTX 5070 Ti, doing work that would otherwise call for a Tesla-class card.
4. Is it the whole chain, or a piece of it?
"IPTV platform" means very different things. Some vendors sell an encoder. Some sell an app. Some sell middleware and assume you bring the rest. Map what you actually need — transcode, statistical multiplexing, playout, delivery, white-label apps, and the business layer (CRM, billing, provisioning) — and ask which parts are one integrated system versus a five-vendor integration project you'll be running. Signal to subscriber to invoice should be one path, not five contracts.
5. Do I own it, or rent it forever?
This is the most expensive line in the decision, and it never appears on the feature matrix. A hosted platform bills your subscriber and hands you a fixed slice — around €0.50 per subscriber — and keeps the rest, permanently, no matter how well you sell. A licence on hardware you own inverts that: you bill the subscriber, pay carriage and a small platform rate, and keep the difference. On a €10 bill that is roughly €3.79 kept versus €0.50 — 7.6× — on the same customer. Ask every "platform" whether you are buying capability or renting your own business.
6. How much of the band does it need?
If any part of your delivery is DVB or a spectrum-scarce estate — MMDS, a handful of carriers, three DVB-T2 muxes — spectrum efficiency is not a nice-to-have. Ask whether the platform does statistical multiplexing, and what it buys you: fitting high-bitrate VBR channels into fewer, fuller muxes lets you occupy a smaller, cleaner slice of band and spend the rest on a more robust modulation instead of demanding a perfect plant end to end.
7. Is it actually running, or is it a demo?
The strongest signal is boring: is the platform running a live service right now? A vendor whose numbers come off a production system — better still, embedded live so you can watch them move — is telling you something a lab slide cannot. Ask to see live data, not a recorded tour.

The best IPTV/OTT platform for you is not the one at the top of a paid list. It is the one that can answer these seven questions with numbers instead of adjectives, deliver both transports from one encode, run on hardware you own, and show you it working. Everything else is a pitch.
