What an IPTV/OTT platform really costs per subscriber

Ask an operator what their IPTV/OTT platform costs and you'll get a licence figure. Ask what it costs per subscriber and the number gets small — and the conversation gets interesting. Because the platform is almost never where the money goes, and optimising it is almost never where the margin is won.

Where a subscriber's €10 actually goes

Take a subscriber paying €10 a month. Before you have kept a cent, carriage fees — what you pay broadcasters for the right to retransmit their channels — take roughly 60% of it. That is the dominant cost in television, and nothing about your platform changes it. What is left has to cover the platform, your network, support, staff and margin.

The platform is about 2% of the bill. You cannot cut your way to a margin by shopping platform licences — the money is in carriage, and in who keeps what's left.

How the platform figure scales

Platform cost is a small flat base plus per-module rates — one line per subscriber, one per live channel, one each for playout, mux, statmux and EPG. Because the fixed part is spread over more subscribers as you grow, the per-subscriber figure falls with scale and settles near the per-subscriber rate itself.

A very small operator pays more per subscriber — the base is spread thin — but it is still under €0.45 on a €10 bill. At 20,000 subscribers it is about €0.22. Either way the platform is a rounding error next to carriage. Which raises the only cost question that actually moves your margin.

Own it, or rent it

A hosted platform bills your subscriber and hands you roughly €0.50 of it. Everything above that stays with the vendor — no matter how many customers you sign or what you charge them. Your service, your apps, your data and your customer relationship live on someone else's infrastructure, and your upside is capped by design.

Own the platform instead — a licence on hardware you buy once — and the arithmetic inverts. You bill the subscriber, pay carriage and a small platform rate, and keep the rest.

It consolidates hardware too. One server doing transcode, statmux, playout, archive, EPG, delivery and billing draws power once — instead of a rack of single-purpose boxes each with its own power, cooling, spares and maintenance window. And the encoding runs on a consumer GPU: 25+ Full HD channels on one RTX 5070 Ti, doing work that would otherwise call for a Tesla-class card.

What to actually model

When you price a deployment, the lines that matter, in order of size:

  • Carriage — the biggest number by far, and largely fixed by your content deals.
  • Network + support — your real operating cost, which IPTV multicast keeps flat per channel and OTT unicast grows per viewer (see IPTV vs OTT).
  • Platform — a small, predictable per-subscriber rate; ~2% of the bill.
  • Ownership — not a line item, but the multiplier on everything you keep: ~€3.79 owned vs ~€0.50 rented.
